Inter lost the first leg 1–0 in Gelsenkirchen (7 May 1997), levelled the tie in Milan when Iván Zamorano scored late in the second leg on 21 May 1997, and were ultimately beaten 4–1 on penalties at San Siro. It was the last UEFA Cup final played over two legs.
