Under Alberto Malesani, Fiorentina finished 5th in Serie A to return to Europe and reached the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. The side played on the front foot with quick transitions, leaning on wide service and a high defensive line that made the Stadio Franchi one of the tougher away trips that spring.

Batistuta was the club’s top scorer with 21 league goals, leading a forward line supported by Rui Costa and Luís Oliveira. He produced decisive runs of scoring through winter and spring, including multiple match-winners that locked in European qualification and underlined his status as Serie A’s most reliable finisher of the era.
