The 1988/89 season is the heart of Sacchi’s first great Milan: European Cup winners after a 4–0 final at Camp Nou versus Steaua București, with Van Basten and Gullit scoring two each. Van Basten was also top scorer in the 1988/89 European Cup (10 goals) and came into the campaign as the 1988 Ballon d’Or winner. Milan finished 3rd in Serie A but also lifted the inaugural Supercoppa Italiana
