Zdeněk Zeman’s first year brought a high-tempo 4-3-3 and one of Serie A’s most attacking sides. Roma pushed up the table and returned to Europe with a top-four finish, trading in quick transitions and wide overloads that suited the new look of the squad.

Arriving in the summer of 1997, Cafu made his Serie A debut and quickly became a fixture at right-back. Nicknamed “Il Pendolino” for his relentless overlaps, he provided width and ball progression on the outside lane, balancing recovery pace with constant forward support.
