Diego Maradona’s 1988–89 season was defined by Europe: as Napoli captain he led the club to its first major continental trophy, winning the UEFA Cup by beating Juventus and Bayern Munich en route and Stuttgart in the final. In Serie A, Napoli finished runners-up to Inter’s record-setting champions, with Maradona operating as the team’s playmaker and penalty taker alongside Careca, Alemao and Carnevale.
