Under Alberto Malesani, Parma delivered a domestic-cup and European double and qualified for the Champions League. The back line—Thuram–Cannavaro at its heart—was the platform, supported by Buffon and full-backs comfortable defending space. Transitions were fast, and set-pieces were a consistent source of chances.

One of the league’s most reliable centre-halves, Cannavaro read the flight early, attacked crosses decisively and stepped out of defence to compress space. He paired authority in the air with clean distribution, and his partnership with Thuram became the league’s standard: few errors, fewer cheap chances conceded.
