A bruising campaign with defensive frailty that ultimately dragged Napoli down the table. Despite the struggles, individual standouts emerged—Ayala chief among them—before the squad was broken up following relegation. At 24 he was already an organizer—elite timing in duels and leadership that soon earned him a move north. Over his Napoli stint he reached roughly a century of matches across competitions, scoring once, and built the reputation that later made him captain of Argentina.
