Under Alberto Malesani the team finished 5th in Serie A to return to Europe and reached the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. It was a high-tempo, front-foot side with Gabriel Batistuta as league top scorer for the club and Francesco Toldo an ever-present in goal.
Luís Oliveira started regularly alongside Batistuta and delivered 15 league goals in 33 appearances, one of the best returns of his career in Italy. He added creative work in transition and combined effectively with Rui Costa, contributing assists as well as goals in a partnership that produced well over thirty league strikes between the front men.
