Signed in the summer of 1989, Klinsmann brought direct pace and clever movement to the centre-forward role, forming an attack with Aldo Serena and feeding off service from Matthäus and Brehme. He reached double figures in the league (13 Serie A goals) and added further strikes in the cups, delivering an impactful first season in Italy and quickly becoming a fan favourite for his work rate and penalty-box instinct.
