1949 Newspaper Tribute to the Torino Players who perished in the Superga Air Disaster, with a poem dedicated to the team.

The Superga air disaster occurred on 4 May 1949, when a Fiat G.212 airliner carrying the legendary “Grande Torino” team crashed into the rear embankment of the Basilica of Superga on the hill overlooking Turin. Returning from a testimonial friendly in Lisbon against Benfica, the aircraft encountered low cloud, rain, and poor visibility on approach to Turin; a navigation/altimeter error is widely cited as the immediate cause. All 31 people on board died: 18 Torino players (including captain Valentino Mazzola), coaches, club officials, three journalists, and the crew.

Torino—four-time defending champions—were posthumously awarded the 1948–49 Serie A title; their youth side completed the final league fixtures, with opponents also fielding youth teams in respect. The tragedy devastated Italian football and the national team (then heavily composed of Torino players), drew an estimated hundreds of thousands to the Turin funeral cortège, and is commemorated annually at Superga, where a memorial plaque lists the victims’ names.
