Paolo Maldini’s 1988–89 season fixed his status as a first-team pillar: the 20-year-old started at left-back in Sacchi’s back four (with Baresi, Costacurta, Tassotti), helped Milan win the European Cup—5–0 over Real Madrid in the semi-final and 4–0 against Steaua in the final on 24 May 1989—and added the Supercoppa Italiana in August 1988. In Serie A Milan finished behind Inter, but Maldini’s consistency in a high line and his clean 1v1 work made him a week-to-week ever-present during the club’s return to the top stage.
