Roberto Carlos arrived in the summer of 1995 and lit up San Siro with that left foot—surging runs, flat-trajectories, free-kicks that whistled. He played just one season in Milan, making 34 appearances and scoring seven goals before departing for Real Madrid in 1996. Inter’s year was turbulent: three coaches, Roy Hodgson taking over in October, and a haul to seventh in Serie A. The Brazilian was sometimes pushed higher up the pitch, a tactical wrinkle he later said hastened his exit.
