Under Alberto Malesani, Fiorentina finished 5th in Serie A to secure a return to Europe and reached the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. The side played on the front foot, with quick transitions and width, and the Malesani year is remembered for a strong spring that locked in European qualification.

Rui Costa operated as the central creator behind Gabriel Batistuta, linking midfield to attack with through-balls, switches, and set-piece delivery. He featured regularly across league and cup, contributed goals from midfield, and supplied a high tally of assists as part of a fluid triangle with Batistuta and Luís Oliveira, a season that cemented his status as Fiorentina’s primary playmaker of the late 1990s.
