Delvecchio thrived in Zdeněk Zeman’s 4-3-3, attacking from the left and timing surges off Francesco Totti’s service. It was his breakout year: Roma’s top scorer with 18 league goals, in a side that finished fifth while leading Serie A for goals scored. Direct runs, back-post headers, and a cool final touch made No. 23 a constant threat as Roma’s front line of Delvecchio, Totti and Paulo Sérgio caught fire.
