Vialli made 52 appearances and scored 33 goals in all competitions, including 14 goals in 30 Serie A matches, as Sampdoria finished 5th in the league. He was also the top scorer in the Coppa Italia with 13 goals, helping Sampdoria win the trophy, and the club reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final, where they lost 2–0 to Barcelona. Still only in his mid-20s, Vialli was emerging as one of the leading forwards in Italy, and that season was a major step in the rise of the famed Vialli–Mancini partnership at Sampdoria.
